The Stroup Hobby Shop

Many times we have been asked why we don't go by 'The Stroup Clock Shop' or any number of more descriptive titles. The answer lies in our history. For you see, in the beginning, that's just what we were- a hobby shop. After his retirement in 1949, our founder, H.M. Stroup, began making Grandfather Clocks as a way to fill the hours of his day. His hobby proved to be a hit- by age 87 he had completed over 800 clocks. The business may have grown but our philosophies have not changed. Each piece is handmade with attention to detail and loving care.

Throughout the years he welcomed son, Bob Stroup, and two grandsons, Robert Stroup and Luther Stroup, into the Clock Shop. Luther took the reins in 1972 and has been making clocks for over 50 years now. The shop is now manned by Luther Stroup and his daughter Victoria, the 4th generation clock maker in the family.

Luther has hand crafted everything from formal dining tables, to old fashion ice boxes, to kitchen cabinets, and many projects in between. Throughout his years at the Shop he has completed 2,500+ clocks. Most clocks are still created using H.M. Stroup's original patterns. Stroup Clocks can be found in all 50 states of the U.S.A., as well as in multiple countries all around the world. They have been personally delivered and installed by Luther to happy customers in 48 states.

The shop harnesses local Appalachian woods such as walnut, cherry, oak, maple, poplar, and wormy chestnut.

The shop has been featured by various media outlets. These include CBS- Handmade in America, WBTV-Carolina Camera, Mountain Hands by Knoxville Press as well as assorted magazines, newspapers, and web pages.
